FLAT FILE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 CONNIE ARISMENDI #80 & 98
At Flatbed Press, we house over 100 drawers—our “flat files”—filled with original prints by a wide range of artists. These prints represent an incredible variety of styles, techniques, and voices in contemporary printmaking.
Flat File Saturdays are special days when we highlight one artist from our collection. We open their drawer, carefully pull out their prints, and display them for visitors to explore. It’s a chance to see work up close, learn more about the artist’s process, and engage in meaningful conversations about printmaking.
For this week’s Flat File Saturday (September 20th), we invite you to explore the prints of Connie Arismendi. On view will be Everyone / Suite of Three, created during her residency at Flatbed Press in Austin, Texas (2021–2022).
Working closely with Flatbed’s master printers, Arismendi produced a suite of etchings and large-scale monoprints that explore the emotional weight and ambiguity of language. Each print features a single word suspended in soft, cloud-like forms, evoking a dreamlike, contemplative mood. These words—open-ended and charged—act as prompts for reflection, shifting in meaning with each viewer’s perspective.
Through layered techniques of softground etching, aquatint, monotype, and chine collé, Arismendi crafted surfaces that feel both expansive and intimate—transforming simple language into visual meditations on memory, identity, and presence.
Flat File Saturdays are a chance to dive deeply into one artist’s work pulled from the Flatbed flat files. We welcome you to join us, discover, and reflect with Connie Arismendi’s prints. Stop by anytime between 12 noon and 5 pm this Saturday!
