Flatbed Press is pleased to announce the publication of a suite of three lithographs by artist Hollis Hammonds, created in collaboration with Flatbed master printer Josh Orsburn. The suite—Future Past I, Future Past II, and Future Past III—comprises color lithographs printed in editions of fourteen. Known for her intricate drawings and immersive installations, Hammonds has developed a body of work that examines the intersections of environmental change, accumulation, and the built landscape. These new editions extend that investigation through the unique possibilities of printmaking, where drawing, relief, and sculptural thinking converge.
Although Hammonds is widely recognized for large-scale installations and meticulously rendered drawings, she sees these practices as inseparable. Three-dimensional objects, furniture, and recurring forms—including houses, trees, clouds, and forests—have long served as the vocabulary of her work. Beginning as a draftsman, she gradually transformed line into physical space through hand-cut wood veneer, sculptural collage, and assemblage, dissolving the distinction between flat image and constructed form.
In collaboration with Flatbed Press, Hammonds has expanded this dialogue through innovative printmaking techniques. Using toner washes and layered lines in multiple plates, she carefully constructed an illusionistic space that allows the prints to move fluidly between two and three dimensions. Rather than reproducing sculpture or drawing, the collaborative process has opened new ways of thinking about both, creating images that are simultaneously physical, atmospheric, and deeply immersive.
The three new editions reveal the remarkable complexity of Hammonds' visual language. Dense accumulations of salvaged wood, tangled vegetation, architectural fragments, and linear structures emerge from richly layered surfaces, inviting viewers to navigate landscapes that feel both familiar and precarious. Delicate passages of drawing are set against bold graphic forms, creating compositions that balance order and collapse, memory and transformation.
"I never considered myself a sculptor," Hammonds reflects, "but have always used three-dimensional objects, furniture, and iconic forms in my work... Working with printmaking and the many types of mediums and methods available has sparked new thoughts on this translation and integration of drawing and sculpture."
These editions demonstrate how printmaking can become an expansive creative medium rather than simply a means of reproduction. Through the collaborative environment at Flatbed Press, Hammonds has discovered new possibilities for translating sculptural ideas into printed form, producing works that retain the tactile presence and spatial complexity that define her artistic practice.
