Flatbed proudly presents a group exhibition by the participants of the 2019 Italian Il Sole Residency at La Romita, Umbria. Artists included in the exhibition are Jo Harvey Allen, Katherine Brimberry, Belinda Casey, Monica Cimino, Suzi Davidoff, Orna Feinstein, Mary Fischer, Elaine Johnson, Charmaine Locke, Erica Stephenson, Sam Schwartz, and Susan Schwartz. We cordially invite you all to come to our ZOOM opening and print aperitivo on July 31 from 6-7 CST.

Flatbed’s Italian Residency is offered to artists every other year and is held at La Romita, a small art school and residence located in Terni, Umbria, Italy. Flatbed’s program centers on offering printmaking processes that are environmentally safe to artists who use printmaking in their artistic practice. Participants are encouraged to incorporate into their work the rich visual experiences of touring the nearby Umbrian towns, churches, and countryside. The 2019 residency was led by Suzi Davidoff and Katherine Brimberry. This past 10-day residency was titled Il Sole because the printmaking process used for this residency was Solarplate etching. Showing in La Romita Revisited is work by the residents and the facilitators.

All participants will agree that La Romita is a place as well as a state of mind. It is a small family-run art studio and school located north of Rome in the hill country of Umbria.  A former Capuchin monastery surrounded by olive groves was built in the late 1500s. As time passed the monastery was deserted and fell into disrepair. In the 1930's it was bought to become a refuge for a Roman family. The family's children became artists and decided to operate an art school and residence at La Romita in the 1950s.  Flatbed has held workshop-residencies at La Romita since 2011.
