Solar-Plate (Polymer Gravure)
Photobucket
Katherine Brimberry
Saturday January 16th
9am-5pm

A fail-safe photo-etching method, solar-plate is a less-toxic printing process that uses UV light (sunlight) and water to process the polymer plate. Students can experiment with Xeroxed, photographic, computer-generated images, or hand-drawn work on Mylar. The printing method is the standard intaglio process. Class may be repeated.

Tuition: $150 (plus paper and solar plates)
Maximum Enrollment: 6

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Polyester Plate Lithography
Photobucket
Veronica Ceci
January 23rd

Polyester plates have revolutionized the way we think about lithography. Students can draw directly on the plates with a ball-point pen or Sharpie and go straight to printing with excellent results. These plates do not require the traditional process of lithography, making them a less-toxic approach. The translucency of the plate solves many of the problems often caused by multiple plate registration, which makes this class ideal for persons who have hesitancy moving into that area. They can be run through a copier, allowing you work from a Xeroxed matrix. These plates may be printed on both lithography and etching presses, making them especially versatile. They are also inexpensive and easily portable. This class is great for all levels and is repeatable.

Tuition: $150 plus plates and paper
Maximum Enrollment: 6

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monotype

Photobucket

February 6th
Cheryl Finfrock

Monoprinting is a painterly, less toxic printing technique where each impression is unique. This versatile method is a great way to develop images, add color to already printed works and an easy introduction to some of the basic concepts of printmaking, such as the mirror effect and basic press operation. This class is suitable for all levels of experience.

Tuition:$150
Maximum enrollment: 6

NEW
Advanced Solar Plate
9am-5pm
With Katherine Brimberry

Advanced Solar plate will also work through issues that emerge when working with larger plates and when editioning. Each participant will be guided through the process of finding an RTP, and methods of editioning and curating will be introduced. Print techniques such as chin colle and a la poupee will covered as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intro to Lithography
Veronica Ceci
March 6th and 7th

Lithography has the unique ability to express gradient tones true to the artist's hand. This process allows the artist to draw directly on the surface to be printed from using familiar materials. Veronica has come up with a foolproof introduction to this normally complicated process, utilizing aluminum plates and an easy to prepare etch. The first day familiarizes you with the process so day two can be focused on creating your personal masterpiece. Please note this class does include use of chemicals, and you will be required to wear gloves for protection during certain processes.

Tuition: $250
Maximum Enrollment: 4

March 13th
Photopolymer Film
Teresa Gomez-Martorell

This unique process mimics the look of a true etching without using acid and utilizes less expensive zinc plates. Artists can create a new image on mylar with India ink or black acrylic paints or choose work from a photocopy of an existing image or photograph. Teresa will take you through the steps of plate preparation, film application, exposure and development all the way through printing your final image. This class is best for those with some printing experience.

Tuition: $150
Maximum Enrollment: 6

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW
Mezzotint
March 20th and 21th With Teresa Gomes-Martorell

Mezzotint is one of the most breathtaking traditional printmaking techniques, with a look that cannot be replicated by any other process. The beautiful velvety qualities in the inked areas and the amazing grey scale tones in the images by scraping and burnishing are well worth the time it takes to rock a copper plate. In this workshop, we will work in the traditional mezzotint way by rocking a plate with a mezzotint rocker as well we will experiment other alternative ways to rough a copper plate. The first day will be spent preparing the plates, and the second day will be spent finishing the images and printing.

Tuition: $250
Limited to four participants

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Encaustic Monotype

Photobucket

March 27th
With: Maggie Jordan

Encaustic monotype is an innovative and contemporary printmaking technique. The process is expressive, fluid and painterly. This approach combines the ancient encaustic painting medium with the popular monotype process. To create imagery encaustic sticks are used to draw on a heated metal plate which melts the wax. Absorbent paper is laid over the heated wax drawing and burnished to transfer the image to the paper. This workshop will include demonstration, instruction, and personal assistance. Each participant should complete several prints during the class.

Tuition $150
Limited to six students

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Collograph
Photobucket
Veronica Ceci
April 10th and 11th

The collographic method is a less-toxic approach to printmaking. Once learned, it is easy to create plates out of materials found around the home. This technique has the unique ability to translate actual textures into images. Instructor will show students how to carve and create value and richly tonal effects. The plate can be printed either as etching or as relief or as a combination of both. This is a great class to explore surface, texture and layering through printmaking.

Tuition: $250 (includes boards, inks, adhesives and solvents.)
Maximum Enrollment: 6

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW Bookbinding
With Angela Morales
April 17th

This introductory level class will focus on the technique of Case binding. Instructor Information

Katherine Brimberry
kbiopic
Born and raised in the small town of Brownfield in West Texas, the daughter of a cotton farmer Brimberry early discovered a love of the arts and concentrated my studies in the visual arts as an undergraduate at Lubbock Christian College in Lubbock, Texas and Highlands University of New Mexico. At Highlands, she was introduced to printmaking as a medium and realized that those methods of making images fit my ways of working and thinking and graduated with a major and minor in fine arts. In 1979 Brimberry began attending the New Mexico State University at Las Cruces and was admitted to the masters graduate program in 1980. In graduate school, I studied with Spencer Fidler, who was instrumental in my choosing to concentrate graduate work in printmaking, specifically intaglio. In January 1983 Brimberry relocated to Austin and found a thriving artistic community to be a part of. Beginning in the fall of 1983, she became an adjunct instructor for Austin Community College and taught courses printmaking, drawing, design, and art history there until 1998. In the fall of 1989, Brimberry and Mark L. Smith founded Flatbed Press. Brimberry also worked as an adjunct professor at St. Edwards University from 1987 until 1993.
