James Surls is one of the most preeminent artists that the state of Texas has produced. His wood-and-steel sculptures are in the collections of the major art museums in the state, and many in the nation, and he has placed many commissioned pieces in major private and corporate collections. Surls was given the Living Legend Award by the Dallas Visual Art Center in 1993. In 1991, he was named Texas Artist of the Year by the Art League of Houston. In 1999, Surls had solo exhibitions at the Marlborough Chelsea Gallery in New York City (catalog), the Glassel School of Art of the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Gerald Peters Gallery in Dallas, and at the Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston. Surls's most recent group show was with Charmaine Locke at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Surls has been working with Flatbed since 1990.
